The SMF Voice Agent is a semi-autonomous conversational AI designed to help people with ALS and similar conditions communicate naturally using only their voice and eye gaze. It combines real-time speech recognition, intelligent response generation, and natural-sounding voice synthesis with a fully eye-gaze-controlled interface. The system can draw on a local knowledge base, chat history, and even live internet search results to provide meaningful, context-aware conversations—without the need for constant clicking or typing.
This project was built in collaboration with the Scott-Morgan Foundation, which empowers people with severe physical disabilities through assistive technology. It was created by Bernard Muller, an entrepreneur, AI artist, and ALS patient since 2010. Bernard, who communicates via eye-tracking technology, developed the SMF Voice Agent to restore the spontaneity of conversation he enjoyed before ALS—and to make that freedom available to others.
The SMF Voice Agent is a semi-autonomous conversational AI designed to help people with ALS and similar conditions communicate naturally. This guide will help you understand and use all the features effectively.
When you first open the app:
Write a message in the text box and
You have three ways to communicate:
💡 Tip: The Voice Activity Detection (VAD) automatically detects speech, so you don't need to click for each sentence!
After you speak or type, the AI generates three response options:
The interface supports eye gaze control through emulated eye gaze (hover and hold):
💡 Note: This feature emulates eye gaze control through hover and hold, making it accessible for both eye-tracking devices and mouse users.
💡 Tip: Start with 3 seconds and adjust based on your comfort. Shorter times are faster but may cause accidental selections.
💡 Note: People represent who you're talking to, not who is using the app. The patient is the primary user guiding the assistant.
Upload documents for the AI to reference:
Supported file types:
Store important information as memories:
💡 Tip: Use memories for personal information, preferences, medical details, or anything you want the AI to remember.
